Seat Reservations are available on our InterCity services running between Norwich and Liverpool Street

National Express East Anglia operates a Penalty Fares scheme that covers all journeys except Stansted Express services from Stansted Airport only, some rural services, services between Sudbury and Marks Tey, and Wickford and Southminster. All Penalty Fare Stations are clearly identified by distinct warning signs at each entrance. At Penalty Fare Stations, if you cannot buy the ticket you require at the station ticket office you must use the self-service ticket machine or ‘Permit to Travel machine. Where a ‘Permit to Travel machine is provided it will be switched on when the ticket office is closed. To obtain your ‘’Permit to Travel’, insert coins up to the value of your fare. You must exchange your ‘Permit’ for a valid ticket at the first opportunity, and pay any difference in fare, either from on-train staff or at a ticket office. The exchange should be made within two hours of buying a ‘Permit’. You must always have a valid ticket or a ‘Permit to Travel’ for your journey before you board a train at a Penalty Fare Station. If you cannot present a valid ticket or ‘Permit’ when requested, you will be liable to pay a Penalty Fare of £20 or twice the appropriate full Single fare to the next station at which the train stops, whichever is the greater. You will then be required to leave the train at that stop or, if you wish to remain on the train, purchase a full Single fare ticket to your destination.

On most of our trains simply leave your bike in the doorway area. There is no charge for reserving a cycle space on any of our trains. However, on some types of train special cycle areas have been created: InterCity trains (Norwich - London): On standard mainline trains, cycles can be carried in Coach A at the end of the train in a secure area adjacent to the Senior Conductor's office. On mainline trains between Norwich and London, reservations are required and can be made by calling 0845 600 7245. To take your bike on the train services shown below it is best to reserve your place in advance, as the four cycle spaces on each train can fill up quickly. However, provided space is available, those turning up on the day will be allocated a space on a first come-first served basis. All of our local trains include modern, easy-to-use cycle-carriage equipment and the on train staff will assist any traveller with their cycle. On through trains between London and Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Peterborough, cycle reservations are required. Class 170s (local services in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, some Norwich - London services) On new Class 170 trains, cycles can be carried in the area marked by the cycle logo (adjacent to First Class) Class 156s and 153s (local services in Norfolk and Suffolk) Cycles can be carried at the end of the train, marked by the cycle logo, using the cycle racks provided. Not permitted south of Broxbourne on London peak services (see Note A). Not permitted between Audley End and Ely in either direction during Cambridge morning peak (see Note B). Note A: 'London peak services' are those trains timed to arrive at Liverpool Street between 07.00 and 9.29 Monday to Friday and depart these stations between 16.00 and 18.59 Monday to Friday. Note B: 'Cambridge peak services' are trains timed to arrive / depart Cambridge between 07.45 and 08.45 Monday to Friday. On all other services we are unable to accommodate bicycles at our busiest times, on trains arriving in London (Liverpool Street or Stratford) between 07:45 and 09:45 and departing London (Liverpool Street or Stratford) between 16:30 and 18:30 Monday to Friday. (Bicycles can be carried during these times for intermediate journeys North and East of Shenfield). There are no restrictions on Saturdays, Sundays or Bank Holidays. Please note that cycles may only be placed in the carriage area provided. Tandems and three-wheeled cycles cannot be accommodated on any train. Bicycles are not carried on buses that replace trains due to engineering work. Folding cycles in carry-cases are carried free on all services.
