Background information:

Network Rail is continuing to improve the 18-span Eskmeals Viaduct across the River Esk estuary. This £4.5 million pound project to safeguard against climate change will see hardwood timber beams replaced with recyclable material which will double the life expectancy from 25 to 50 years, improving the structure of the track and making it more robust. This will require the closure of the railway line between Whitehaven / Sellafield and Millom with rail replacement buses in operation between Saturday 7 and Sunday 22 September. There is a page containing project information on the Northern website.
